There’s a new trend going around on TikTok with thousands of people posting under the hashtag “Bed rotting”, but what is it exactly?
Bed rotting is simply; doing nothing, nothing important or productive. Bed rotting could be described as staying in bed for some time while only doing fruitless activities. This might include, taking excessive naps, scrolling on social media, or binge-watching your favorite show. We all need a break once in a while. Whether it’s from work or school “Bed rotting” can be a great way to unwind. It makes sense this new relaxation idea is trending, life can be hard. However, there is a line between rest and disregard. While this might seem like a fun new “self-care” trend going around, for some it can be a sign of mental exhaustion.
Its Nothing New
Even though bed rotting seems new, it’s nothing unheard of. Before it had a name (and a hashtag) bed rotting was a common warning sign for someone with mental issues; mainly depression. It was used as a coping mechanism for those struggling, those who felt like anything other than lying in bed was too much. The most serious side of bed rotting is simply self-neglect. Many people on the internet have shared stories of them failing to take care of their basic needs. Things like Brushing your teeth, taking showers, and properly eating are all things that can be neglected when in this state.
User @t16tum on TikTok says she “Didn’t brush her teeth and shower for months. Her room was rotting, and bugs were everywhere slowly eating her skin.”
User @skeletoncrpse on TikTok says “I can’t remember the last time I showered, shaved, washed my face, or wore clean clothes. I brush my teeth maybe every 2 months because the smallest easiest tasks are impossible for me sometimes”.
Bed rotting may be a fun trend that helps people get away from a stressful work day or unwind. However others, it can reflect a deeper issue about their well-being. Instead of a time for relaxation, it’s a coping mechanism for emotional exhaustion and a lack of willpower.
My Experience
When my struggle with depression was at a high point, I often found myself staying in bed for long periods. At the time I was homeschooled and that enabled me to do nothing throughout my days. I would wake up in the afternoon and go to bed in the early morning. I often found myself spending ungodly hours on my phone, and days would go by when I hadn’t seen the sun. Dishes, laundry, and trash would pile up in my room because I didn’t have the motivation to clean. I didn’t have the motivation to do anything. I gained weight because of my constant binge eating and low activity, and when I finally got out of my slump; I didn’t recognize myself.
We must remember to stay mindful and be able to find the line between relaxing and neglecting. For one person it’s self-care, and for another, it’s a shutdown. Being able to recognize the difference is essential for our mental, physical, and overall health. Remember; if you find yourself in a state of neglectful “Bed rotting”, it is never too late to get up.
